Other than a quick phone call to someone Z referred to as the Cleaners, the ride back to the gym is completely silent. Something I’m more than grateful for, considering the stabbing pain in my side. Right about now, I’d kill for the healing abilities of a hunter. Even a vampire. Both factions heal a hell of a lot faster than witches and shifters do.

I’m just grateful they didn’t take a chunk out of Z like she’d threatened. I’d rather bear all the pain, especially considering it’s my fault to begin with. I should never have brought him into this. The second we left together, I should have made him take me home.

I shiver, and Z cranks up the heater. I wish I could tell him how it wasn’t because I was cold but rather because the mere thought of him getting hurt chills me to the bone. Even as I think it, I know there’s no world where I can admit that to him.

Because doing so would mean getting closer when we should be pushing apart.

He shuts off the engine and rushes around to get me, wearing nothing but Candice’s emergency blanket wrapped around his waist. I push open the door, wincing when I move too quickly. Wrapping an arm around my back, he tucks one beneath my knees and lifts me, carrying me to the door with little effort.

“I can walk,” I insist.

“Yes. But I can carry you,” he counters and then holds out a hand for my key.

I hand it over, not sensing he’s willing to stop treating me like a broken child. At least not while my side is charred like an overdone marshmallow at a campfire.

After unlocking the door, he moves us inside and locks it behind us, not setting me down again until we’re inside my apartment. He lays me back on my bed and straightens. “Where’s your first aid kit?”

“Under the sink.”

With a nod, he turns away and retrieves it.

“I’ll be fine. I have someone I can call.”

“Who?”

“My friend Candice. She’s a light witch—a healer.”

“Call her,” he orders.

“I was already planning on it. But you probably shouldn’t be here.” The last thing I need is her putting two and two together after I questioned her on the shifter mating bond earlier.

“I’m not leaving.” In demonstration, he plops down on the single chair at my rickety table.

“She’s aiming for a spot on the council,” I argue. “If she sees you here—”

“I’m. Not. Leaving, Mate,” he growls.

The way he says mate is more than enough proof there’s no way I’m getting rid of him until I feel better. A fact that shouldn’t have relaxed me, but it does. Sighing, I manage to stay on my feet as I limp across the room to the phone hanging on the wall.

Z stands and starts toward me, but I shake my head. “Sit down. There’s no way I’m letting you call her.”

He sits without a word, so I dial her number and lean against the wall. Thankfully, she answers on the second ring.
